This practical workshop shows participants how to build their own GIS project environment using QGIS, open spatial data and live data services relevant to civil engineering projects.
Rather than starting from scratch on every new job, participants learn how to bring commonly used spatial information into one place, interrogate it and develop reusable project templates that can be adapted for different councils, locations and future projects.
This can significantly improve the way early project due diligence is undertaken. Instead of repeatedly searching council and government websites, interpreting multiple PDFs, reviewing planning information in isolation or recreating available information in CAD, participants learn how GIS can bring these datasets together spatially.
The workshop is designed for practical application. Participants work with civil engineering datasets including property parcels, stormwater, sewer, water, aerial imagery, LiDAR and other available open spatial data.
For organisations, the workshop provides an opportunity to build GIS capability internally and develop repeatable workflows across projects.
For individuals, GIS provides a valuable additional technical capability that can complement drafting, design and engineering skills. QEH has seen drafters and designers develop their GIS capability to become the go-to GIS resource within their teams.

Requirements
Previous GIS or QGIS experience is not required.
The workshop is particularly valuable for drafters, designers and engineers wanting to broaden their technical capability, as well as organisations wanting to establish stronger internal GIS capability.
Participants should have:

QGIS installed and tested prior to the workshop

Windows 10 or later recommended (Limited QGIS support may be available for macOS and Linux)

A computer capable of working with spatial and LiDAR datasets

Sean is a civil engineer and educator with more than 20 years of industry experience across civil infrastructure, land development, stormwater management, road design, mining and multidisciplinary project delivery. Sean has more than 10 years of teaching experience and has trained engineers, designers and technical professionals across Australia.
Sean’s teaching focuses on practical application, first-principles understanding and engineering judgement, helping participants build capability they can apply directly to real projects.
